FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions about Ceremonial Cacao

Here you'll find answers to the questions we most often receive about ceremonial cacao: its use, effects, safety, dosage, and everything in between.

If your question isn't listed here, feel free to send us a message — we're happy to help.

1. What exactly is ceremonial cacao?

Ceremonial cacao is pure, minimally processed, high-quality cacao (often Criollo), made without sugar, milk, or additives.
It is traditionally used for meditation, rituals, focus, creativity and emotional deepening.

The difference with regular cocoa is the purity, fat composition, energy en intention with which it is made.

2. How much cocoa do I use each time?

It depends on the purpose:

  • Daily dose / microceremony: 10-15 g

  • Gentle ceremony / meditation: 20-25 g

  • Full ceremony: 30-42 g

Always start lower if you are new to this, have a sensitive stomach, or react quickly to stimulants.

3. When do you drink ceremonial cacao?

Popular moments:

  • morning ritual

  • new moon / full moon

  • meditation or yoga

  • inner work or journaling

  • creative sessions

  • dance, sound healing or breathwork

  • for sports (as a natural pre-workout)

  • during self-care moments

You don’t need to do a ceremony — cacao works wonderfully on its own, too.

4. Is ceremonial cacao the same as cacao powder?

No. Ceremonial cacao still contains all cocoa butter (the fats that support its heart-opening effect).
Cocoa powder is heavily processed, defatted and therefore has a milder effect.

Do you want the deep, warm effect? Then choose cocoa paste (ceremonial cocoa).

5. Is it safe to drink cocoa every day?

For most people: ja.
Cocoa is rich in antioxidants, minerals (especially magnesium), healthy fats and theobromine.

Very important:

  • drink enough water

  • listen to your body

  • keep the amount mild (10–15 g is enough for daily use)

6. Can cocoa be combined with medication?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
Please note:

  • antidepressants (SSRIs, MAOIs)

  • blood pressure medications

  • heart medication

  • pregnancy or breastfeeding

  • strong stimulants or caffeine

Are you unsure? Always consult your doctor.

7. Can you drink cocoa during pregnancy?

Many women drink small amounts of cocoa during pregnancy, but:

  • keep it at a low dose (5–10 g)

  • avoid ceremonial dosages

  • listen carefully to your body

The same applies to breastfeeding.

8. Can you combine cocoa with coffee?

That is possible, but not everyone likes it.
Both are mild stimulants—cocoa softer (theobromine), coffee harder (caffeine).
If you are prone to nervousness: start without coffee.

9. What is the best way to prepare cocoa?

In brief:

  1. Finely chop or grate your cocoa

  2. Heat water or (vegetable) milk to a maximum of 70°C

  3. Beat/blend until creamy

  • roses – heart opening

  • ginger – heat & energy

  • chili – activation

  • maca – power & stability

  • beet powder – oxygen & endurance

11. How does cacao work on the body and mind?

Cocoa contains:

  • theobromine → soft energy & better blood circulation

  • tryptophan → precursor of serotonin (rest & mood)

  • magnesium → relaxation

  • antioxidants → cellular protection

The effect is warm, clear, open and focused — without the peaks and crashes of coffee.

12. How long does ceremonial cacao last?

Unopened: 2–3 years
Opened: 1 years, provided it is stored in a cool, dry and dark place.

Cocoa contains natural fats that have a good shelf life.

13. Can I use cocoa for sports?

Secure.
Many athletes use cocoa for:

  • calm energy

  • more focus

  • better blood circulation

  • mildly increased alertness

  • no nervous feeling like coffee

14. Why is ceremonial cacao so expensive compared to supermarket cacao?

Because it:

  • comes from better quality beans (usually Criollo)

  • is produced with more respect

  • less processed

  • all cocoa butter contains

  • supports small batches and fair trade projects

It's a completely different product.

15. Which cocoa should I choose?

In brief:

  • Pure Ceremonial Cacao → intense, powerful, deep focus

  • Blends (such as Natural Blend) → softer, warm, accessible

  • For sports → Pure or a combination with maca/beetroot

  • For ceremonies → Pure is the most traditional

On the page “Which Cacao Do You Choose?” you will find a complete comparison.

16. Do I have to do a full ceremony?

Cacao is for everyone — your way.

Sometimes a deep ceremony is nice.
Sometimes a few conscious sips.
Sometimes you just drink it because it tastes good.
