Frequently asked questions about ceremonial cacao
What is the difference between ceremonial cacao and regular cacao?
Ceremonial cacao is of a much higher quality than regular cocoa powder or chocolate. It is minimally processed, contains no additives, and is sourced from specific cocoa varieties such as the Criollo bean. All natural fats, minerals, and bioactive compounds are preserved. Regular cacao often undergoes an industrial process in which many of its natural properties are lost.
How do I prepare ceremonial cacao?
For a standard cacao drink, use approximately 20-25 grams of ceremonial cacao paste. Grate or finely chop the paste and add it to hot water at a maximum of 70°C. Mix well with a Molinillo or immersion blender. Add plant-based milk, honey, or herbs to taste. For a full ceremony, use a higher dosage of approximately 40-42 grams.
Is ceremonial cacao suitable for everyone?
Ceremonial cacao naturally contains stimulants and is not suitable for people with serious heart conditions, pregnant women in the first trimester, people taking MAO inhibitors, or people who are highly sensitive to stimulants. Always consult a doctor or healthcare provider if in doubt.
How do I host a cacao ceremony at home?
A home ceremony begins with creating a quiet, sacred space. Cleanse your space with smudge sticks or Palo Santo, set an intention, prepare your cacao mindfully, and drink it consciously and slowly. Our Cacao Guide and the free e-book The Art of Home Ceremonies we guide you step by step through this process.
