This special wood has a rich history and has been valued for centuries for its unique aroma and spiritual benefits. But what makes Palo Santo so special? Where does it come from, what are its effects and how do you use it in your daily life? In this article we dive into the history, the effects and the different ways in which you can integrate Palo Santo into your rituals. Let's start this fragrant journey together!
What is Palo Santo?
Before I started looking into Palo Santo, I didn't really know what it was exactly.
But of course, since I speak Portuguese, I literally translated it in my head, which resulted in ‘holy pole’. Almost right… But it’s much more beautiful than that! Palo Santo, which in this case means ‘holy wood’, comes from the Bursera graveolens, a tree belonging to the Boswellia family. This family also includes well-known resins, such as myrrh and copal, all of which have a strong odour and are often used in incense or cosmetics. But what makes Palo Santo so special is that it is not the resin, but the wood itself that is used.

Where does Palo Santo come from?
The Palo Santo grows in the coastal regions and mountains of Latin America, with a distribution extending from Mexico to Peru and Venezuela.
But you can also find this tree on the Galapagos Islands and in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Colombia and Ecuador. Sustainability is very important when collecting Palo Santo wood. It is strictly regulated so that this precious natural resource is preserved. Only wood that has fallen naturally from the trees is collected. This keeps the living trees intact and preserves the ecology of the area. In addition, the wood must mature for 4 to 10 years after collection to develop that wonderful scent that makes Palo Santo so special.
Palo Santo in various cultures
Palo Santo is used in various cultures for ceremonies and rituals. Shamans, for example, used the wood in all kinds of healing and purification rituals.
One of their most famous rituals is the ayahuasca ceremony, in which a tea is prepared from tropical plants. The tea is drunk to cleanse the body, mind and soul. Burning the wood releases a wonderful, sweet smell that enhances the energy in the air. This is said to lead to a meditative state. Indigenous South American communities also have great respect for Palo Santo and believe in the many healing properties of the wood. In addition, the Incas, Mayans, Criollos and various other indigenous groups used this wood to remove evil spirits and to promote happiness, well-being and prosperity.
How Palo Santo Works
Palo Santo is often considered a bridge between the earth and the divine.
The wonderful scent helps you to open your 'third eye' chakra, which strengthens your intuition and spiritual awareness. After a thorough cleansing with sage, which removes all negative energy, Palo Santo is perfect to fill the room with positive energy. It also creates a nice atmosphere during meditation, rituals or just in your living room or office!
This sacred wood is not only great for your mind, but also for your emotions. In our busy lives, where stress often prevails, this sweet, fragrant wood offers calm and peace. Palo Santo is known for its relaxing properties, possibly due to the presence of limonene, a substance also found in the peel of citrus fruits. A 2013 animal study showed that inhalation of limonene exhibited anti-stress and anti-anxiety effects. Additionally, a 2014 study demonstrated that ingested limonene reduced stress levels in rats.
Despite these results, human studies are needed to investigate how Palo Santo affects stress. In addition to the spiritual benefits, Palo Santo also has physical benefits. It has been used for generations to alleviate cold and flu symptoms, reduce inflammation, and boost your immune system. It may also be helpful for muscle pain and joint inflammation. A 2017 review suggests that Palo Santo has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, but there is no definitive evidence for these effects. Again, more research is needed to confirm these results.
How do you use Palo Santo?
Using Palo Santo is a ritual that can help you relax and purify your space.
It’s like a little ceremony that you can incorporate into your daily life! Start with a fine, dried piece of wood. Light one end and let it burn for a few seconds. Then extinguish the flame, and let the smoke do its magic. This smoke is perfect for purifying your space, yourself, or even your favorite spiritual objects. Gently move the smoldering wood around the room or around the items you wish to purify. As you do so, you can say an intention or a prayer—or just be still and enjoy the moment. Whatever feels right for you is the key! When you’re done, place the wood on a fireproof surface and let it die down. Don’t forget to check that the fire is completely out. By following this simple process, you’ll create a serene atmosphere and fill your space with positive energy.
